Independent Study

Independent study is an alternative education program which offers the flexibility to meet individual student needs, interests, and styles of learning. Independent study is not an alternative curriculum and independent study students are expected to meet the same educational objectives as all other students. Independent Study Curriculum is aligned to grade level standards and state content standards.

Vallecito Union School District has entered a joint Memorandum of Understanding Agreement with Mark Twain Union Elementary School District (MTUESD) to offer a long term Independent Study program to students grades 6-8 interested in enrolling.

If you have decided you would like to enroll your child in an Independent Study program, the following steps need to be completed.

  1. Contact VUSD to begin the interdistrict transfer request process.
  2. Verify that there is space available in the MTUESD Independent Study Program.
  3. Complete an interdistrict request form to attend MTUESD and submit to the VUSD office for consideration and approval.
  4. The Governing Board of VUSD will need to approve your attendance at MTUESD.
  5. The Governing Board of MTUESD will need to approve acceptance of your attendance at MTUESD as a non-resident of the district.

Once both Districts have provided approval, the Independent Study Teacher will contact you to go over the program, complete an independent study master agreement, introduce you to the curriculum and materials, and loan you a technology device, if needed.

To learn more about the process, please contact Titia Ashby at the District Office at 209-795-8503.
